With the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic, unfortunately CASA's activities have had to be put on hold. The Cedar Centre, our home in Castor, is still currently closed, and with a number of our members being, well, "very experienced artists", it would be impractical to go ahead with get-togethers and other events when many would not be able to attend due to being at higher risk.
However, maybe a lockdown is an opportunity to get out the brushes? There is certainly no shortage of inspiration available on the television.
Channel 4 screened Grayson's Art Club during the height of the lockdown, with Grayson Perry talking to celebrity amateur artists, professionals and members of the public about art they had produced based on the week's theme. He also produced some of his own work during the series, including a ceramic sculpture of his childhood teddy bear, Alan Measles, with a pandemic theme.
The BBC did Life Drawing Live!, with viewers challenged to draw on-screen models in a series of short drawing exercises.
BBC4 is currently showing The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross (pictured), an artist with a cult following due to his appearances on American TV in the 1980s and 90s. Whether you are a fan of his style of painting or not, half an hour in his company is half an hour free of stress, and one where nobody ever makes mistakes when painting, only "happy little accidents".
On Sky, Portrait Artist of the Year and Landscape Artist of the Year are both regularly on, both the 2020 series and past years' series. Amateur and professional artists compete to win through to the final, and it is fascinating to see how works of art - paintings, drawings, collages and more - are put together, often with exceptional results.
And of course you can usually find almost anything you want to watch on YouTube, for example Hannah Gordon's Watercolour Challenge, or demonstrations by Alwyn Crawshaw.
